Peter Saville’s images have permeated contemporary culture. He is co-founder and art director of the independent label Factory Records. His radical designs, most notably for Joy Division and New Order, seemed to break all the rules, omitting information about artists or titles, fundamentally questioning modes of consumption and communication.

In 2015 Saville was commissioned by Tate to create a graphic response to the evolving form and function of Tate Modern. Saville understood the experience of the gallery to be defined by the sum of its interacting spaces. The evolving architecture by Herzog and de Meuron was opening up new galleries and creating access to them through fluid social areas. Saville chose to see these as individual volumes, treating each as a three dimensional colour field within the overall composition of the building. By employing levels of transparency his colour fields appear to continuously merge and overlap determined by one’s orientation.

His approach was designed to evoke Tate Modern’s newly expanded immersive environment and express the relational experience between art and audience.
